Chapter 15

Looking around, David asked. “Are you sure you don’t want that maple desk? It would save moving the one at your old place.”

Lin took another look at the sturdy desk. Much larger than her small one, it would take up more space. Then again, the studio was huge compared to her attic room. “Okay, you convinced me. I can leave the old one for my landlord’s grandson.”

When they trooped upstairs, Lin said, “Thank you again for taking me to see Kevin and for dinner. This has definitely been one of the best Sundays I’ve spent in a long time.”

Glancing at her upturned face, her blue-gray eyes shining with appreciation, David’s heart opened to her. Her expression of gratitude touched him deeply. Another more lecherous thought intruded. His nearby bedroom with its comfy king-size bed beckoned like the songs that lured sailors to their death. Inwardly, he shuddered. He’d better get her home quickly. “You’re very welcome, Lin. Now I’ll drive you home. It’s getting late.” With those abrupt words he ushered her out to his waiting car.

She sensed his conflicted feelings but wasn’t sure what brought them on. Oh well, he was just being himself, one minute warm and caring, the next withdrawn and moody. She couldn’t figure him out.

After David drove her home, Lin decided not to fret about his lack of communication. She sensed his inward struggles, but had no clue what the problem could be. Since he was close-mouthed on personal issues, she decided to let the matter rest. Once home, she changed into pajamas and began making a list of what needed to be done before her move in less than two weeks. When the phone rang, she wondered if it could be David. Instead it was her mother.

“Hi Mom, sorry I haven’t been in touch. Between packing my stuff and the dance performances coming up, I’ve been really busy. How’s grandma?”

During the chat that followed Lin discovered her mother knew about the phone call her father made to her. Evidently he’d contacted Owen and complained about Lin’s lack of concern for her two younger half-brothers.

“Really?” Lin’s voice was angry. “No way would I ever put myself in that position. Dad seems to think he can corral me into taking care of his two little monsters every time he and Taylor need a vacation. Well, I’m not interested in babysitting for them.”

Her mother laughed. “I don’t blame you. From what I hear, they are pretty difficult to control. I can’t help being amused by the whole scene.”

Lin was glad her mom took the situation in stride, but wondered how she could be so light-hearted. “Doesn’t it bother you that he’s not around anymore?”

After a brief pause her mom replied, “To tell the truth, I’m having a pleasant time on my own. I’ve made several good friends and we keep busy playing cards, going out for lunch and other entertainment. As long as your grandma’s health is stable, I’m content. How are you? I don’t want you to be stressed out with this move.
